Why should I open your e-mail?

When you use e-mail to reach out to people you do business with, or would like to do business with, think about your own jam-packed inbox. How eager are you to open notes that look like they might be spam, or to decode messages that don't display properly?

Busy people do inbox triage, quickly deciding which messages to read, ignore or delete unread.

Yet e-mail is such a familiar tool that we often fail to pay attention to the basics, and widely used e-mail marketing tools like Constant Contact allow us to make mistakes on a large scale.
