Agency gets tough with hotels behind on commissions

March 26, 2008 | Hospitality Industry

New York-based Protravel International is striking hotels that fail to pay travel agent commissions in a timely manner from their preferred supplier list in an effort to deal with the growing issue.

Protravel International, a New York-based travel agency, is taking a hard line with hotels that are behind in commission payments to travel agents. As of January 2008, any hotel whose commission payments are more than 30 days delinquent from the time a guest departs will no longer be a preferred supplier of Protravel International.

“One European hotel chain owes us many thousands of dollars in past due commissions,” says Senior Vice President, Andy Pesky. “This is unacceptable. Agents make their living from the commissions generated by the travel services they provide, including, most importantly, hotels. And for independent contractors, this is their salary and they simply can’t wait six months and sometimes longer to be paid.”
