Declining numbers from pay-per-click advertising and an upper level exodus to social networking rival Facebook has Google a bit depressed this year. Analysts have been questioning whether the downturn has to do with the economy or if Google is the master of its own undoing.

The latest Google comScore report showed that paid clicks, or the measure of web searchers viewing advertising, were down 3% month-over-month and total search volume was down 4.6% month-over-month.

Yet, as results from tracking companies are very often unreliable, analysts have been questioning whether the downturn has to do with the economy or if Google is the master of its own undoing. The company has worked on reducing the amount of inadvertent clicks on ads as well as paring down the number of ads per page to make them more visible. The company is cutting down on unintentional clicks by reducing the clickable space around the words in the ads.
