By breaking free of the physical constraints of the store, e-tailers can offer an ever-widening range of goods. They can introduce new market mechanisms, such as auctions. They can enrich service by making more information available. They can trump the high street by slashing the time and effort consumers have to invest in shopping. They offer ultimate 24/7 convenience.

What’s more, they can transform industry cost structures. The high costs of running retail locations are rendered irrelevant if you have the logistics skills to go direct from warehouse to door.

With online phenomena like Amazon, Ebay and Tesco.com, the gurus are being proved right.
