European tourism adapts to quick-moving Chinese

Five years ago some eight million Chinese nationals were on the move, today that figure has risen to 12 million and will reach 100 million by 2020.

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page. Saint Augustine’s maxim holds as true today as when he uttered the thought some 1600 years ago. So, too, does the Confucian saying that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

But even as dollar-hungry tourist havens seek to lure an ever greater share of a constantly expanding and evolving market, one country stands on the verge of changing the face of the entire industry.

The single step that is likely to prove a giant leap came with the move last month by Chinese authorities to liberalise rules on issuing visas to its nationals for foreign travel.

That one move will ultimately turn Augustine’s book into an entire library.

But is the world ready for the consequences?
