Internet goes from novelty to necessity

The Internet has become the way the world keeps in touch with family and reconnects with old friends. And 71 percent of Internet users will shop online in 2003, eMarketer estimated.

A study by eMarketer Inc., an e-commerce consulting firm, found that in 2002, 88 percent of Internet users surveyed said they went online to do research or just to search for an answer. About 71 percent of Internet users will shop online in 2003, eMarketer estimated.

The research doesn’t have to be information about Einstein’s theory of relativity, although that’s certainly there. More likely it is about maps, phone numbers, price comparisons, stock prices, medical and drug information.

“The Internet has become for many people a huge combination library/phone book/encyclopedia,” wrote Leah Lievrouw, a UCLA professor who has studied the Internet for years.
