Marriott raising room rates in some U.S. cities

Hoteliers have reported more business travelers are on the road and are offering fewer discount rooms, signaling an industry turnaround.
Marriott International is raising room rates in some cities, Chief Executive J.W. Marriott said in a sign the lodging industry’s recovery from a three-year slump is gaining ground.
Hoteliers have reported more business travelers are on the road and are offering fewer discount rooms, signaling an industry turnaround. The next phase, analysts have said, would be for hoteliers who have struggled in a buyers market to start charging guests more, and Marriott himself saw spotty signs of that.
“I can’t really say how much we are raising rates yet, it differs from week to week,” Marriott said at company headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.
Marriott, which represents a chain with 2,700 hotels worldwide, so far is raising prices primarily in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and New York, said President and Chief Operating Officer William Shaw.
