Modest improvement forecast for US travel industry

January 11, 2010 |

Leisure travel is expected to rise 2 percent, while business travel is projected to increase by 2.5 percent this year, according to the U.S. Travel Association. International inbound travel is expected to increase by 3 percent nationwide.

The numbers represent modest improvement over a bad year, but U.S. Travel said it will be enough for the industry to start adding jobs again. But whether it'll be able to increase prices remains a big question.

This year will be another year in which value will be in vogue, according to the results of an October travelhorizons survey by Orlando-based Ypartnership and U.S. Travel.

The results of the survey suggest that "both business and leisure travelers will sharpen their travel planning and purchasing skills further to ensure they don't overpay, while their discovery and embrace of the next generation of online booking tools is certain to place additional pressure on suppliers' margins," Ypartnership said.
