TripAdvisor Select scam targets hotels

February 13, 2012 | Hotel Marketing

As reported by Tnooz, a number of hotels have recently been contacted by an individual claiming to be the new “director of traveler reviews at TripAdvisor”, offering what sounds like a curious and potentially explosive new development from the user review giant.

The email, which included a sign-off with the address of the company’s official Massachusetts headquarters in the US, says the company is launching a programme known as TripAdvisor Select.

According to the email, TripAdvisor is looking into ways of giving a select number of hotels on the site with the best reviews a rubber-stamp of approval to say that the property has been audited and verified for high quality by the company itself following a visit.

Hotels getting the official thumbs-up from TripAdvisor would be rewarded with a logo on the site to say it is one of the best in a particular city under the TripAdvisor Select programme. What's more, having the official sanction would prevent other users from leaving negative reviews about a property.

According to Tnooz, TripAdvisor is preparing to contact all hoteliers on its database to notify them about the TripAdvisor Select scam.
