Travelers’ favorite use for smart phone: GPS

Travelers' No. 1 use of their Web-enabled smart phones? Reaching a destination using the built-in GPS, a new study unveiled this morning says. According to the 2010 Portrait of American Travelers, three in 10 cell phones in use in the USA today are now Internet-connected smart phones.

Of these smart phone owners, the study says that 19% have downloaded a travel-related app that could include Hilton's iPhone app launched last November or InterContinental Hotels Group's iPhone app launched in April.

he report, released by travel marketing firm Ypartnership and research firm Harrison Group, is based on a February survey of 2,524 U.S. households with annual incomes of at least $50,000.

Of the travel-app using smart phone users surveyed:

- 47% have navigated to a destination using the built-in GPS,
- 29% have compared airfares or hotel rates,
- 28% have shared photos about their travel experiences using their smart phone,
- 18% have booked air travel or lodging, and
- 15% have gone to a site that provides information on things to do and see while visiting a destination
