Travelers prefer agents for trip plans

The age of online travel planning has eroded the amount of airline ticketing done by local travel agents but has not substantially affected trip planning, agents say.

The age of online travel planning has eroded the amount of airline ticketing done by local travel agents but has not substantially affected trip planning, agents say.

Other forces, including airline industry retrenchment, fear of flying, SARS and cruise-ship viruses, have challenged the travel business as much as the Internet, which local agents say they use to their advantage. Nevertheless, the Internet has forced them to react accordingly.

“Usually, what people do is, they come in and say ‘I found this [fare] on the Internet; can you match it?’ Ninety percent of the time I can, even for a couple of dollars less,” said Rosemary Callahan, owner of Global Travel Services in Pittsfield.
