It has been 10 years since the launch of online travel, but most wholesalers and retailers are content to maintain their traditional methods of selling travel through mainstream processes, resulting in less than 10 per cent actively using the net today.

The issue of future strategies for wholesalers and retailers were discussed at last week’s TraveTECH conference in Sydney, which brought together a panel consisting of COO Webjet, Richard Noon, Managing Director Creative Holidays, Justin Montgomery and Chief Operating Officer, Jetset Travelworld, Gai Tyrell.

Speaking about the internet and whether it was too late to begin online operations, Mr Noon used the increasing popularity of Webjet to illustrate the overwhelming growth in the online sector, however even though Mr Montgomery and Ms Tyrell did not rule out the use of the internet for selling travel in the future, both were committed to their current means of distribution for the time being.

“Sometimes you have to swim against the tide of popularity,” Mr Montgomery said.
