While hotels are looking at customer-facing technologies to help improve their competitive position and increase customer satisfaction, back-room operations - wireless connectivity, data mining and enterprise storage and search technologies - are among the technologies expected to have the largest impact, according to a recent report from PhoCusWright Inc., a hospitality research firm in Sherman, Conn.

While not as flashy as cell phone-controlled rooms and iPod-powered music systems, the back-room platforms are crucial to hotel operations.

Most consumers never see the back-end technologies at work when they book a room and check in, and that is the way hoteliers want it, according to the survey.
