With the number of travelers shrinking, and individual airlines offering reduced fares, Orbitz.com, the Chicago-based online travel Web site, announced last month an estimated $25 million reduction in annual costs, including a plan to cut its U.S. workforce by 10 percent.

Not only are people traveling less over the last few months but many are using sites like Orbitz more for just research. Many check out fare options and go on to book directly with the supplier, avoiding a transaction fee and maybe getting better deals.
