Online travel agent Expedia claims it, and not TUI, is market leader for online sales in Germany.

TUI chairman Michael Frenzel said in a recent FVW interview that the group’s German websites had a combined market share of 24%, which was well ahead of the likes of Expedia.

But the new Expedia Germany managing director Jens Uwe Parkitny responded: “TUI can only see our back lights on the internet. We are the online portal with the greatest reach.” According to market research organisation Nielsen Netratings, Expedia had 14.1 million visits in 2005, ahead of Opodo (10.3 million), L’Tur (7.6 million), TUI (6.5 million) and Lastminute.com (5.8 million). Although Expedia does not release country sales figures, Parkitny confirmed that the US firm moved into profit in Germany last year. About 40% of package holiday sales are now generated by Expedia’s own dynamic packaging products, he added. This year, the company aims to add more Mediterranean destinations.
