Steve Barnhart's job puts him at the controls of a big player in online travel. He's the new president of Orbitz Worldwide, a unit of Cendant travel specialist spinoff Travelport that includes travel Web site Orbitz. Orbitz Worldwide also runs the Cheaptickets travel Web site, as well as foreign-based online travel services like HotelClub.com.

Barnhart was tapped in early September when Orbitz was lifting off with new owners. Equity firm Blackstone Group bought Travelport from Cendant in a $4.3 billion deal that closed in August.

Second-quarter results issued last month by TDS Investor of Bermuda, the Blackstone unit that owns Travelport, show Orbitz-Cheaptickets outpacing rivals such as Expedia and Sabre Holdings' Travelocity in gross bookings.

To keep its online travel business flying, Barnhart says, Orbitz Worldwide is pushing a five-point strategy that improves how it delivers travel services to consumers.
