A piece of glass lodged in her left foot almost ruined Mary Ellin Lerner's Christmas vacation in Orlando.

She planned to swim with dolphins and take her 14-year-old son to theme parks but worried that an infection was festering. "I didn't want to go to the emergency room in a strange city and spend two, four, six hours," says the singer/writer from Washington, D.C. "Who wants to spend their vacation in an emergency room?"

She dialed The Peabody Orlando hotel concierge for advice; within an hour, a doctor from the EastCoast Medical Network was at her door.

As Lerner relaxed on the bed, the personable physician cleaned up her foot. "She gave me antibiotic tablets, cream, bandages. The whole thing was easy and efficient."

The tab: about $300, probably no more than an emergency-room visit would cost.
