The online travel industry in India is growing at 125% annually. Generating revenues of around $300-$500m currently, the size of this industry is around 2% of the entire travel industry’s. Though no definitive figures are available on the size of the travel industry in India it is estimated to be anywhere between $20bn and $50bn.

“Growing at the current rate the online travel industry in India may become a $2bn industry by ’08. In this highly competitive industry only those travel portals that will address travellers needs rightly will sustain,” says Sandeep Murthy, CEO, Cleartrip.com. Cashing on this growth the travel portals are adding new facilities or features to attract the travellers.

Cleartrip has entered into a digital content licensing deal with Lonely Planet, a travel content brand to launch Small World, which will provide a comprehensive set of travel guides for the international and domestic destinations. Maps will be also be made available from the Lonely Planet and Google giving users access to the detailed street level maps.
