U.S. online retailers are dipping their toes in foreign markets. Asian markets are especially tempting, either because of their sheer size or because their communications and financial infrastructures create ideal electronic marketplaces.

In a survey of 186 U.S. online merchants by Internet Retailer in April 2005, more than one-third said they generate 10 percent or more of their annual online sales from customers outside the U.S..

Topping the list of foreign markets where US retailers are making sales is the U.K., no surprise given the language barriers in other markets. But Japan ranks second, and China and India also make the list.
