Consolidation in the online travel world hasn’t stopped and won’t stop, even though IAC/InterActiveCorp. and Cendant seemed to have gone in the opposite direction with spin-offs of their travel units.

Speakers at the PhoCusWright Executive Conference argued that although the jury is still out on the wisdom of the IAC/Expedia break-up and Cendant’s proposed division into four businesses, further travel industry consolidation is in the offing.

“This will continue to be a scale game” driven by companies’ needs to develop greater capacity to shift share for suppliers, said Scott Barry, an equity research analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston, during a Street Talk panel.

“In other words, big is good,” said Eugene Quinn, PhoCusWright chairman, who moderated the panel. “Big continues to be good.”
