Some travel Web sites are feeling so confident about their service or their low prices that they've started offering guarantees.

Perhaps the most famous of the Web-travel guarantees is the much-hyped Travelocity Guarantee, which says the company will work to resolve any travel problem right away. Maybe you've seen the TV ad that shows the Travelocity gnome appearing at a hotel to enforce the guarantee, only to be run over by a bellboy's baggage cart.

This summer, rival Expedia started a "Hassle-Free Hurricane Promise," offering to aid travelers whose trips are affected by hurricanes. In addition, several airlines this year started guaranteeing they offer the lowest fares for their flights.

But are these guarantees more hype than help?
