Pan-European online travel company Opodo has bolstered its European team with the appointment of Petra Friedmann to the newly created position of director of sales and marketing.

Friedmann is currently country manager for France and will sit above European head of marketing Isabelle Ratinaud. An advertising agency pitch is currently being run by Ratinaud to take on the next marketing project for Opodo. The last campaign was created by Karmarama.

Friedmann, who will remain based in Paris, will have overall responsibility for the brand, customer positioning, marketing, sales and revenue generation across all Opodo markets.

Opodo, originally formed by nine airlines but now owned by travel technology company Amadeus, is facing fierce competition from rivals such as Expedia and from the beefed up online operations of traditional tour operators such as Thomson Holidays.

It recently appointed Sally Balcombe as commercial and product director and Friedmann will report to her. Balcombe said: “Opodo has grown rapidly over the last 12 months, both organically and through acquisition, and we felt the time was right to expand the commercial team by appointing a European director of sales and marketing to capitalise on this success.”
