The rise of long weekend vacations can be good news for online travel providers. According to the annual study by PhoCusWright, weekend travelers spend $6 of every $10 on travel Web sites, vs. just $3 of every $10 for those taking vacations of a week or longer. PhoCusWright did phone interviews with 500 online travel shoppers.

Travel Web sites such as Kayak, Orbitz and Expedia offer services for the weekenders.

Kayak last month unveiled a search tool specifically for weekend air fares. Among other things, the new service lets users compare flight prices for upcoming weekends or for all weekends in a specified month.

"Plenty of studies show that weeklong vacations have fallen out of favor in the U.S.," said Steve Hafner, Kayak's co-founder and CEO. "People are going for shorter, multiple trips."
