While art hotels are nothing new, their popularity is growing as companies look for ways to take their properties out of the ordinary and into the extraordinary in a highly competitive market. Upscale hotels have displayed and commissioned works from well-known artists for many years, sometimes showing pieces from a single collection, like Las Vegas billionaire Steve Wynn whose Bellagio hotel lobby boasts the reportedly $40 million "Fiori di Como" glass sculpture Dale Chihuly; their Gallery of Fine Art features rotating exhibits by the masters (43 works by Picasso are on display until January 10, 2016). Collectors Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson opened their first and very successful 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky in 2006, then went on to open properties in Bentonville, Arkansas and Cincinnati (and reportedly more to come) with works taken primarily from the couple's 2000-piece collection.
