In an email sent to subscribers Thursday morning, TripAdvisor chief executive Steve Kaufer said the company is actively pursuing the matter with law enforcement and that the source of the vulnerability has been discovered and shut down.

“How will this affect you? In many cases, it won’t,” Mr. Kaufer said.

“Only a portion of all member email addresses were taken, and all member passwords remain secure.”

“Members may receive some unsolicited emails (spam) as a result of this incident,” he said, noting that TripAdvisor does not collect credit card or financial information from its members.
