Experiential travel retail is the new standard for hospitality across the board. Hotel brands are finding innovative ways to tackle the emerging trend - while still staying true to their brand.

Take Renaissance Hotels, a division of Marriott International. For the first time in eight years, the brand is introducing a reinvented visual identity that places emphasis on the local neighborhoods surrounding each hotel, promising guests an unexpected and exclusive experience each time.

The transition is accompanied by the launch of a new marketing campaign dubbed “Discover This Way,” a targeted storytelling approach to design featuring handpicked experiences from neighborhood experts.

Foreign travelers to the United States bring billions of dollars into the economy each year. But that flow of people and money now appears to be at risk.

Last year set a record for tourism: 78.6 million foreign travelers came to the United States in 2018. But following that banner year, tourism is now in a slump. Travel in early 2019 is in decline, particularly from Canada, Mexico, China and South Korea. That slowdown started taking place in the second half of last year.

The travel industry is worried about how severe, and long lasting, that decline could be. Experts point to a number of factors working against travelers coming to the United States.

Lastminute.com is putting the vast bulk of its digital ad spend into Facebook, over Google, following a three-month trial to compare the effectiveness of each platform on the travel company's customer acquisition strategy.

Despite lingering questions over brand safety, measurement and fraudulent traffic, the online travel giant has come to the conclusion that Facebook is the best place to invest its digital ad dollars.

The reason for the shift was two-fold; firstly, it rates Facebook's data for allowing it to optimise ads and secondly are the campaign automation tools Facebook has offered to almost instantly develop hundreds of different creative iterations of assets.

Is the hotel industry sleepwalking into a regulatory crisis?

On September 14th 2019, radical new regulation will shake up online card transactions, yet hotels are not prepared for the fundamental changes in store.

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a requirement of the European Union’s sprawling Revised Directive on Payment Services (commonly known as PSD2), and will demand that issuers receive two separate types of authentication to approve the vast majority of online (‘card not present’) transactions.

When SCA comes into effect on September 14th, ‘card not present’ transactions will require two of the following three types of authentication: Knowledge (something you know - for example, a password); Possession (something you have - a credit card or smartphone); and Inherence (something you are - biometrics such as Touch ID or even voice recognition). A credit card and CVV number are no longer enough.

Having a blog, although it may seem like a chore, provides a stream of genuinely useful content for your guests, and can also attract new guests to your hotel.

These days it’s essential for most businesses, big or small, to have a blog. We expect much more from service providers than we used to, and a blog is a great way of building a community and a stronger relationship with guests.

It’s also more effective than SEO and social media in increasing your web traffic. Search engines consistently favour sites that provide current, up to date content – meaning if you keep your blog posts fresh, dynamic and try to post consistently, it will genuinely attract more eyeballs.
