Rate, supply concerns weigh on latest US hotel outlook

STR and HVS talked data at the NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference and how their outlooks on the rest of the year have changed.

The pace of overall U.S. hotel industry growth has slowed, due in part to rising supply, growing expenses and less-than-aggressive pricing of average daily rate. But industry analysts point to some bright spots, like demand, group performance and a steady overall economy, that are contributing to forward motion, even if it comes at a slower pace.

Speaking at the NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference, STR President and CEO Amanda Hite and HVS President and CEO Stephen Rushmore Jr. put the latest performance trends into context.

Marriott’s four lifestyle, select-service brands are growing at a fast pace while bridging a gap between traditional select-service and full-service.

Marriott International’s select-service brands, particularly in the lifestyle chain scale, are on a fast development track, with more than 70 projected openings and nearly 450 signings globally for AC, Moxy, Element and Aloft in 2019.

Westin Hotels & Resorts unveiled a new worldwide culinary program, adding to the brand’s existing wellness offerings and helping travelers fuel their workouts, productivity, and sleep.

This new culinary offering provides options that suit guests’ individual dietary needs and preferences. Westin will also implement responsibly sourced and organic items. The new menu will be available at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and through in-room dining.

Amazon to shut down its Amazon Restaurants business in the U.S.

Amazon ended the program in London last year in November and will say goodbye to its U.S. service later this month.

Amazon Restaurants first launched in Seattle back in 2015. Amazon expanded the program across more than 20 U.S. cities and later in London. The service gave Prime members a way to get meals delivered to their door, using the Amazon Restaurants website or through the Prime Now shopping app.

Amazon will also shut down Daily Dish, a workplace lunch delivery service that launched in 2016, on June 14. This move comes less than a month after Amazon led a $575 million funding round for Deliveroo, a U.K.-based food delivery company.
