Chinese tourists are shunning the United States amid the trade war and opting for destinations in Europe, said Jane Sun, chief executive of Ctrip.

The US slid to 10th spot in the list of China’s top overseas destinations in a week-long national holiday in October known as the “golden week” from fifth in the previous year, according to Ctrip.

During the recent Labor Day holiday earlier this month, the US ranked as the ninth-most popular travel destination for Chinese tourists, down from fifth spot last year. Thailand and Japan remained the top choices.

Hotels: Navigating the complexity of online travel

Rather than resisting new technology and global players, Expedia has called on the hotel industry to be optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead.

For example, the capabilities to imagine a data-informed and action-driven bot that provides a hotelier with recommendation on how to optimise their positive reviews, such as consistent concerns with less than ideal ratings on breakfast.

Now, imagine that instead of an experience that gives you the insights and actions via words on a screen, it comes to life in human video bot to guide you through them, helping to further optimise company performance, similar to Google Assistant. Well, this is something Expedia is already working on, and we can expect to see in the not too distant future.

Google continues to iterate on its hotel search interface and experience for destination searches.

When it was released back in 2018, the hotel search interface was only accessible from a destination search by clicking on the bottom button of the local pack to view additional hotels. Doing so would direct you to the hotel search page with equal sized card-view listings.

In a new testing experience, clicking on any property in the local pack directs a user to the hotel search page. The clicked property has its card pinned to the top of the page with property information expanded to the full width of the card section.

ll begin featuring ads on the homepage of its smartphone app worldwide later this year, giving the search engine a huge new supply of ad slots to boost revenue.

Google will also start placing ads with a gallery of up to eight images in search results, potentially increasing ad supply further.

The changes come as choppy revenue growth prompt questions from some investors about whether services such as Amazon and Facebook’s Instagram are drawing online shoppers and in turn, advertisers away from Google.

By incorporating chat and messaging features within a native app (versus integrating third-party apps), hotels own the experience, data, and security.

Consumers who prefer live chat report that not only do they get their answers quickly, they can also multi-task. This matters before and during their experience.

Beforehand, guests want to be able to handle simple communications and book their reservations while going about their other business. On property, the ability to chat means that guests don’t have to step away from their activities to stop by the front desk or make a phone call.

Though your hotel messaging might appear in various forms, the impression you create for your audience about what your hotel stands for should remain the same.

Cohesive branding is key, whether you’re creating in-room brochures, posters, online message boards, external sales brochures, pay-per-click ad copy, social media posts and comments, OTA listings, influencer blogs, etc…

Being cohesive across all platforms is the best strategy for building a brand identity and essence that your audience can connect with. But, like most things, putting that strategy into practice is easier said than done. This is how we get started when developing messaging for our clients.
