Smaller hotels don’t have the dollars to spend on marketing and PR, but if they perform, their guests will say so, and others will read about it online.

You can spend a lot of money on research firms, focus groups and consultants, and the big brands do because they need data to back up their decisions. They need to have it validated.

For smaller companies, you're more likely to see senior managers and owners in the hotels talking to the employees and guests and walking the halls. If they hear something that sounds like a good idea, if it makes sense, they can try it quickly. In big companies, that rarely happens.

Global geopolitical issues apparently had businesses feeling anxious in the first half of 2019, and that impacted how much they were willing to spend on employee travel.

Various hotel executives spoke during second-quarter earnings calls about a slowing of business transient.

According to James Risoleo, president and CEO, Host Hotels & Resorts, Businesses were cautious in the quarter, likely driven by the global slowdown and the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing trade negotiations.

He believes this led to a decline in business-transient demand, especially in major markets such as New York and San Francisco. All of these factors resulted in weaker results than the industry anticipated.


TripAdvisor WiFi add-on drives restaurant email marketing

TripAdvisor is offering restaurants their own custom-branded WiFi add-on so that eateries can collect contact information about customers and send them emails to generate more reviews on the travel platform and encourage repeat dining.

TripAdvisor WiFi Plus is a subscription service powered by social WiFi marketing provider Captini. Restaurants that register for the service receive a hot spot that connects to their own in-house WiFi.

When guests sign in to TripAdvisor WiFi Plus with an email address or social media credentials, they see a landing page custom-branded for the restaurant and automatically receive an email after they leave encouraging them to post a review on TripAdvisor.

On average, restaurants that use TripAdvisor WiFi Plus collect 70% more reviews, TripAdvisor says.
