While Booking.com and Expedia lead the segment, there are some amazing tech startups which are transforming the sector and gunning fierce competition to these tech giants.

Dayuse strives to handle daytime hotel bookings. The company gives customers the opportunity to use the hotel room and other services that are usually available only for guests staying overnight.

Luxury hotel booking platform MyRoomIn claims that guests can get the exact room that they have chosen during the booking process.

DreamCheaper helps customers find better deals on their existing hotel reservations and rebooks the same for them.

As travelers increasingly demand standout experiences, luxury hotels are moving beyond their traditional focus on rooms to come up with exclusive offerings, increasingly in partnership with tour operators.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, for instance, this month announced an exclusive partnership with luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent to provide guests with experiences ranging from culinary tours and fashion insights to art, adventure and sports.

Kristin Ruble, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group's senior vice president of brand and experience marketing, said her company's partnership with A&K is designed to give guests unique access to local experiences.

Even as technology becomes more complex, the one “trend” that remains constant is the value of humans in building customer relationships.

“The future of hospitality is increasingly transversal, shaping and being shaped by global movements, industries and consumer values. Emerging trends in sustainability, luxury, technology and innovation are all influencing the future direction of the hospitality industry,” said Benoît-Etienne Domenget, CEO of Sommet Education, (parent of Glion Institute of Higher Education and Les Roches Global Hospitality Education.)

A new Sommet Education white paper covering hospitality in 2019 explores those four areas are intertwined.

Atlanta-based attorney John S. Foster recommends meeting planers to include a few new contract inclusions that go beyond the common attrition, cancellation and force majeure clauses.

Audit arrangements: Some hotels have a standard clause that allows the buyer to send a rooming list and the hotel will do an audit to identify additional rooms booked outside the room block. That sounds nice, said Foster, but it's not enough.

Personally identifiable information/GDPR: "Meeting sponsors have to make sure suppliers are complying with all U.S. privacy laws as well as the GDPR, when applicable," said Foster.

Voice is fundamentally changing every aspect of search, from how results are presented, to which optimizations are most effective.

The integration of voice assistants has proven to be popular with consumers, especially among certain demographics. The use of voice assistants to conduct searches isn’t just a novelty. In fact, once consumers try voice search, they tend to prefer it.

It’s important to realize that text-based search and voice-based search are not the same thing. Consumers and search engines approach each differently, so brands need to do the same.

Managing metasearch: strategies for success

Metasearch is a channel that doesn’t usually get the attention it deserves, despite the fact that it can play a vital role in a hotel’s marketing mix.

In today’s digital landscape, visibility is the key to success. Metasearch is arguably the best way to gain exposure because it instantly shows guests what they’re often looking for: the price of a hotel room.

Metasearch helps hotels gain back some control by letting them decide the rate for specific stay dates and room types. Rather than endlessly competing with OTAs, metasearch is about giving hotels a way to drive the conversation by creating a baseline for guests to compare.

A recent ReviewPro analysis found that Google reviews increased by 309% from 2016 to 2017 and by an additional 114% from 2017 to 2018.

How can you stay on top of responding to Google reviews? Just ask Jurys Inn. In the past two years the company, which operates 45 properties across the UK, Ireland and the Czech Republic under the Jurys Inn and Leonardo brands, has improved its overall review score significantly while maintaining an impressive quality and turnaround time for management responses.

“The real importance of Google is its prominence in everyday life,” said Alex Hannon, Customer Experience Manager. “It’s almost omnipotent at this point. It’s also the first point of call for people searching for a hotel stay.”
