Expedia’s chief executive officer warned against European countries taxing big tech companies’ digital services, telling CNBC that it would just end up costing consumers.

“These digital services taxes are something that should be a concern,” CEO Mark Okerstrom said last week. “The second that you start taxing these platforms and start putting friction in the system, ultimately the concern is that it ends up landing right in the hands of consumers.”

Earlier in the month, France passed a 3% tax on Big Tech’s digital revenues, and the U.K. is proposing its own 2% digital services tax.

Trends in how people, and brands, consume and process information online are driving digital marketing strategies for independent hotels.

It’s important not only to have an online presence but also to have the proper digital footprint, sources said.

A potential guest visiting an independent hotel’s website must have access to information that is intuitive and search-friendly, said Amy Ramskill, director of sales and marketing at Hotel Erwin in Venice Beach, California.

“It’s our No. 1 priority because the current buyer has so much access to information,” she said.

Three-quarters of travelers start their hunt for a place to stay on a search engine: While this is good to know, there’s one big problem: there is little room for your independent hotel and its website to stand out.

You might have the best website in the world with the most seamless booking experience, but if it’s sitting pretty at the bottom of the search results, you’re going to see more tumbleweed than eager travelers coming through your digital doors.

This is where your digital marketing strategy comes into play. Not only will it help you climb the search rankings to sit side-by-side with OTAs, but you’ll also have more control over your own booking process and how you engage with your guests.
