Report: Hotel direct booking efforts create lasting loyalty

Jan 31, 2019 / Direct Bookings

Hotels need to ensure that consumers continue to remain loyal and to book direct - whether driven by discounted rates or the promise of a better guest experience for loyalty members.

Consumers generally believe, they won’t get a bad deal booking brand.com but they won’t get the best deal. There’s still that perception among consumers that there are lower rates out there, according to a report from Kalibri Labs (free registration).

Brands are getting better about demonstrating the advantages of booking direct. But at what price difference will guests book direct?

A big part of this direct booking push is still tied to the brands’ ability to continue to market the importance of booking direct to consumers.

Cvent data shows potential group booking slowdown

Jan 31, 2019 / Group Bookings

Advance bookings on the Cvent platform seem to be lagging, which could indicate either a downturn in event bookings or simply the fact that event organizers are booking closer to the time of the actual event.

The latest edition of Cvent’s Group Business Outlook shows that demand for bookings in the years ahead is lagging behind expected metrics. The report pulls from the Cvent Supplier Network, which features 255,000 venues.

The data shows a marked downtick in awarded group rooms pace compared to prior years, but advanced bookings have picked slightly up over the last quarter. Bookings for the fourth quarter of 2020, in particular, are currently down 3 percent compared to the previous year.

Request for proposal activity, however, heated up over the second half of 2018.

Why are Chinese tourists shopping less?

Jan 31, 2019 / China

The recent headlines proclaiming that Chinese tourists are shopping less abroad may seem alarming, but it’s not all bad news, particularly not for the travel industry.

While it’s true that as many Chinese tourists aren’t choosing shopping as their primary purpose for travel, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t spending money on travel or spending any less while abroad. It simply indicates that priorities have shifted in terms of where their money is spent.

As the Chinese government introduced new regulations concerning luxury goods purchased abroad, fewer travelers may be willing to bring back expensive items from their overseas holidays.

Besides spending less on luxury products abroad, it has been previously reported that Chinese tourists are spending less per trip but traveling more frequently.

Hilton London Bankside

This suite at the Hilton London Bankside is completely vegan, from the furnishings to the room service.

The furnishings industry is loaded with leathers, feathers, and wool, none of this could be used in the world’s first vegan hotel suite, which uses only sustainable, plant-based components.

“The main challenge was searching for interesting materials that were not only vegan, but sustainable and environmentally friendly,” says studio Bompas & Parr cofounder Sam Bompas. “We focused on what is important to vegan culture, steering away from synthetic materials and focusing on botanical formed, future materials.”

Google takes first steps toward killing the URL

Jan 31, 2019 / Google

Google isn't trying to induce chaos by eliminating URLs. Rather, it wants to make it harder for hackers to capitalize on user confusion about the identity of a website.

In September, members of Google's Chrome security team put forth a radical proposal: Kill off URLs as we know them.

The researchers aren't actually advocating a change to the web's underlying infrastructure. They do, though, want to rework how browsers convey what website you're looking at, so that you don't have to contend with increasingly long and unintelligible URLs - and the fraud that has sprung up around them.

In a talk at the Bay Area Enigma security conference on Tuesday, Chrome usable security lead Emily Stark is wading into the controversy, detailing Google's first steps toward more robust website identity.

'Future proof' your hotel with total sales culture

Triptease speaks with Sandy Russell, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Wharf Hotels about cultivating loyalty, a perspective beyond the points schemes.

Despite the attempt of hotel players to redirect to their brand websites, hotels have merely poked them with the bait of direct booking rewards and best rate guarantees.

Savvy OTAs started to offer their own loyalty rewards, and hotel groups figured out that there also is a lot of room for improvement in hotels' loyalty schemes.

Millennials pay much more attention to the opinions of others when making brand choices. Loyalty programs therefore need to be less about collecting points and more about experiences - great memories and Instagrammable moments.
